This site was developed as a means for you to visit our little company without actually having to leave your home. We hope that you'll like what you see which will in turn make you want to stop by and visit.

Star Fish Company was started in the early 20's by Judge Millis. Gaylord Garner purchased the business in the 1950's and his son Allen took it over when his father died in the late 80's.

Star Fish Company had primarily been a wholesale company prior to the addition of the retail market in the 60's. Mr. Garner had thought that many people wanted a place where they could purchase locally caught seafood. He was right! The retail market built up a solid clientele of both locals and visitors.

In 1996 Allen Garner sold the company to its current owner, Karen Bell. Karen felt that in addition to offering the public fresh seafood in the retail market, it made sense to start offering cooked seafood also. A small kitchen was upgraded and eight picnic tables were placed on the back dock. A restaurant was born!

Cortez Village, where Star Fish Company is located, is found on the northern edge of Sarasota Bay. It is one of the few remaining working waterfronts left in Florida. The view from Star's dock is incredible. It includes mangrove islands, Jewfish Key, Longboat Key and Bradenton Beach. Add to that the local commercial fishing fleet and you've got one of the most scenic places found on Florida's Gulf coast.

Star Fish Company strives to serve simple Florida seafood prepared in the simplest of ways. Most items are either fried, grilled, blackened or sauteed. Sides are kept simple, too. There's cole slaw, cheese grits and french fries. Of course, don't forget the hush puppies! We haven't found any better!

There are two ways to get to Star Fish Company. By car take Bradenton's State Road 684 (aka Cortez Road or 44th Avenue) west until you come to 123rd Street West, then turn south (left). Go two blocks to the end and you run right into Star. If you're coming by water, you'll want to head east along the shoreline south of the Cortez Bridge. You'll pass the U.S. Coast Guard Station and A.P. Bell Fish Company before coming to Star's back dock. Just idle on in and tie up to whatever's free.

We hope you enjoy viewing this site. Although the photos are nice, they really don't do the place justice. That's why you'll have to stop by and see for yourself.
